Welcome to My Kitchen Serenity!  I hope you find this Strainer Buying Guide helpful.  It contains the thought and research that I went through to pick out a colander that I would use for me and my kitchen needs.

I am pretty excited about my new spaghetti colander!!!  It has everything I wanted in my new pasta colander.  The criteria I used to determine the best strainer were Amazon customer reviews, price point, design, construction, and warranty.

So, let me tell you a little bit about this great colander and why I picked it over some other models.

Amazon Customer Reviews

When I started looking at customer reviews, I wanted a product with at least a 4.5 out of 5.0 rating based on greater than 1,000 individual customer reviewers.

According to Amazon customer reviews, this LiveFresh Colander received a star rating of 4.7 out of 5.0.  That is pretty impressive especially when you consider that rating is based on over 2,200 separate Amazon reviews.

So for the customer review criteria, this strainer passed the test.

Product Price

My goal with pricing was to stay under $20.  To me, $20 seemed like a reasonable price.  I was pleased when I saw this particular colander was listed on Amazon (at the time of this writing) for less than $20 at $19.97.

Strainer Design

I did some research on colander design.  Many of the complaints I’ve read revolved around the holes being too large allowing smaller food items and water to pass through.

The cool thing about the LiveFresh colander is the micro-perforations are small enough to prevent pasta and tiny seeds from passing through.  The perforations are all around this strainer rather than some other models with sections of solid plating.  With the all-over perforations, water can easily and quickly flow through.

One of the great design features of this particular strainer is the base plate.  The strainer base plate is sturdy enough to support the strainer if you place it in the sink or on the counter.  The stainless steel construction also provides for greater durability.

Additionally, the base plate has holes in it.  After reading some of the reviews, buyers complained about the lack of holes in the base plates of other pasta strainers.

Base plate holes allow water to pass through and not pool when the strainer is sitting in the sink.  If the strainer’s base plate doesn’t have holes, water passing through the strainer can collect and back-up into the strainer and your food.  Gross!

Strainer Size

When it came to the size I wanted, I wanted a strainer large enough for a big pot of pasta but not so big that it took up too much storage space in the cabinet.

According to my research, 5-quarts seemed like a perfect size.  At 5-quarts, the LiveFresh Strainer is large enough to hold a full pot of spaghetti without the worry of overfilling.

I really wanted my new colander to be sturdy.  I knew that it was going to get lots of use and I didn’t want to have to be shopping for another one anytime soon.  Like I mentioned above, the stainless steel construction allows for greater durability.

The LiveFresh colander is pros product constructed of dishwasher safe 18/10 stainless steel.  Not sure what 18/10 stainless steel means and how it relates to colanders?  Check out this article, Understanding 18/10 Stainless Steel.  In short, the 18 and 10 represent the percentage of chromium and nickel alloys in the steel.  The greater the percentage, the more rust resistant the steel.

I liked the heavy-duty construction which should be less likely to deform or dent.

I was also really drawn to the wide handle on this strainer.  The strainer handles on some of the other brands seemed a bit thin for my taste, but these are nice and wide and easy to grip.

The final selection criteria for me was the product warranty.  Does the manufacturer stand behind their product?

The LifeFresh colander comes with a 100% lifetime manufacturer’s warranty.  If you don’t like it for any reason or it malfunctions at any time, you can get your money back.  That’s a pretty good deal, huh?

Other Top Stainless Steel Paste Strainers I Considered

I picked the Livefresh 5.0-quart pasta strainer, but there are several comparable options.

Best Over-the-Sink Colanders for 2020

Over-the-sink colanders are pretty cool in that they have expandable arms that allow the colander to be suspended over the sink.  This design gives a great hands-free option if you need both hands to pour the pasta, spaghetti, or other items from the pot to the strainer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Difference Between Strainers and Colanders

Generally speaking, people often use the terms strainer and colander interchangeably.  Both terms describe a kitchen tool with holes in the bottom used to separate solids from liquids.

In reality, there are some differences between a strainer and a colander.

Colanders are often larger and bowl-shaped with handles on each side.  These are most often used for draining pasta and/or rinsing vegetables.  Colanders typically have larger holes.

Strainers, on the other hand, are often smaller with a wire mesh and a single long handle.

When to Use a Pasta Colander

So, when would you use a colander?  As mentioned above, colanders are most often used to drain water from a pot of pasta or noodles.  Colanders are also frequently used for draining beans or washing fruits and vegetables.

This review from Spruce Eats includes a great list of different things you can use your new colander.

How to Clean and Care for Your Colander

Here is my suggestion and what I do.

Right after using your colander, you are going to want to rinse it really well to remove food particles.  You don’t want the pasta (or any food for that matter) to have time to dry.  Allowing food time to dry is only going to make your cleanup job that much harder.

Once you are ready to really clean your colander, use soap and warm water with a scrub brush.  Here is a great post from How to Clean Stuff on how to clean your colander.  If it’s particularly dirty, fill your sink with warm soapy water and allow it to soak for a bit.  Give it a good scrubbing to remove any food left from your initial rinsing.

After you are done and your strainer is good and clean, take a hand towel and dry it thoroughly.

Pro Tip: Spray your colander with cooking spray (post from Purewow) before using it.  This is going to prevent pasta and other foods from sticking to it.
