Beef Consommé vs Beef Broth
You may wonder what the difference is between beef consommé and beef broth. Essentially, there are some basic differences in color, taste, and texture.
Broth is a cloudy, light to medium brown liquid. Consommé isclear but darker and a little thicker.
Consommé has more of a rich, robust flavor while broth is usually on the milder side.

When You Need a Beef Broth Substitute
Beef broth is commonly used in soups, stews, gravies, and braised dishes to add rich, savory flavor. If you're out, the right substitute can still give you that same depth... choose one that best matches your recipe.
Choosing the Best Beef Broth Substitute
If you're out of beef broth, you've still got plenty of good options. The best substitute depends on what you're making-chicken broth and beef stock are great for soups and stews, while mushroom broth, Worcestershire sauce, and beef base can add deeper savory flavor to sauces and gravies.
Start with the ratio that fits your recipe, then taste and adjust as needed. Once you know which substitutes work best in different dishes, it's a whole lot easier to keep supper moving without a trip to the store.
Anne's Expert Tips
While there are many very suitable substitution options, your choice will come down to what you have on hand and if you are interested in a vegan/vegetarian option.
One of the key tips is to test the flavor of your broth substitute. The addition of bay leaves or other herbs and spices can really enhance the flavor.
If you only have a small amount of beef broth and not enough for your recipe, you can combine beef broth with a substitute above for your recipe.

Frequently Asked Questions
You can, but it won't give you the same flavor. Beef broth adds richness and depth, while water can make your dish taste a little flat.
If you have to use water, try adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce, a little soy sauce, or some herbs and spices to boost the flavor.
Yes, beef consommé can be used as a substitute for beef broth in a 1:1 ratio.
It has a richer, more concentrated flavor, so your dish may taste a bit more robust-but it works well in soups, sauces, and gravies.
Beef broth is made by simmering meat, while beef stock is made by simmering bones.
Stock is usually richer and thicker because it contains more collagen, while broth is lighter and more seasoned. Both can often be used interchangeably depending on your recipe.
The best substitutes for stew are chicken broth, beef stock, or mushroom broth.
These options provide enough depth and richness to hold up in slow-cooked dishes. For an extra boost of flavor, you can also add a splash of red wine or Worcestershire sauce.
Yes, you can skip beef broth, but your dish may lose some richness and depth of flavor.
Beef broth adds both liquid and savory flavor, so if you leave it out, your recipe may taste lighter. For best results, use a substitute like chicken broth, bouillon, or mushroom broth.

Sam says
Holy moly do not use 1/2 water to 1/2 soy sauce, I trusted the process and it reeeeks in here and the food is basically like I let it just sit in a bowl of nothing but soy sauce. Maybe try 1/4 soy to 3/4 water as a sub to be safe.
Anne Clark says
Oh no, I’m so sorry about this Sam. I will fix my post but sorry you had to deal with my mistake. One should definitely start out low when it comes to using soy sauce. Perhaps as low as 1 tablespoon per 1 cup of water and work their way up to a suitable ratio.
Further, using liquid aminos is a little different and can be more of a 1/2 cup liquid aminos to 1/2 cup water for 1 cup broth replacement. I’ll fix this asap.
