Why You'll Love These Pancakes
Quick and easy - They're so easy to make, and much, much better than any mix! You'll know exactly what goes into these pancakes.
Banana-chocolate flavor combo! Dark chocolate seems to be the favorite choice to pair with bananas, but there are no rules so I like to use semi-sweet chocolate for this recipe because it compliments the sweetness of the bananas.
Easy to find ingredients! You probably have most of these already. So if you have a bunch of really ripe bananas, now you know what to do with them!
If you still have some overripe bananas after making this recipe, give my delicious Banana Nut Muffins a try. They're one of my most popular recipes!
What Goes in Them
Here's a quick peek at the main ingredients for these banana chocolate chip pancakes.
Ripe bananas - the bananas need to be overripe. Which means there needs to be a lot of browning or spotting on the peels and soft to the touch. However, we don't want bananas that are brown on the inside.
Refer to the ingredient picture below for what an overripe banana looks like. Note, you may also want to buy a couple of perfectly ripe (all yellow skins, no blemishes) bananas to slice and plate them with your cooked pancakes.
Chocolate chips - this recipe calls for semi-sweet chocolate chips but if you're a huge fan of milk chocolate chips, then use them! You can also use mini-chocolate chips. Whatever your choice, be sure it's a high quality brand of chocolate.
All-purpose flour - do not use self rising flour because the results won't be the same.
Refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post for the remaining, basic ingredients.
How to Make Them
You'll love how easy these banana chocolate chip pancakes are! Just be sure to follow the actual recipe card at the bottom of the post when you get ready to make them.
(1) Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and cinnamon in a bowl.
(2) Mash the bananas in a separate bowl.
(3) Add the egg, milk, melted butter, chocolate chips, and flour mixture to the bananas. Slightly whisk. Try not to overmix -- overmixing will cause the pancakes to not be fluffy.
(4) Place about ¼ cup of the batter for each pancake onto a hot griddle (or skillet) and cook for 1 to 1-½ minutes per side. Repeat until all the batter is used up. Top with maple syrup and banana slices.
For a large crowd, you can serve pancakes buffet style with additional sides such as eggs, bacon or sausage, fried potatoes, grits, yogurt cups, and assorted juices.
Recipe FAQs
You can store any leftover banana chocolate chip pancakes in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Keep them in an airtight container. Gently reheat them in the microwave (or eat them cold for a snack!).
Yes, water will work but the pancakes may not be as flavorful and could cause a slightly thinner batter. Start off with ¾ cup of water, and then slowly add more water until the batter is about the consistency of honey. Treat Dreams has put together a comprehensive list of more substitutes for milk in pancakes.
Overmixing is the most common culprit! You only want to whisk the batter until it's just combined. Lumps are fine! Bon Appetit has put together a list of Common Pancake Mistakes and How to Avoid Them.
Yes, you can freeze pancake batter for up to 3 months. The texture won't be as good but it's totally edible. Just thaw, then cook as usual. However, instead of freezing the batter, I suggest use the batter to make more pancakes and freeze the pancakes. They'll last about 3 months in the freezer.
How to Mash a Banana
Seems pretty simple enough, right? Actually, there are several ways to mash a banana. The end result should be a smooth consistency similar to applesauce. It's OK to have some small pieces of banana.
Fork - this is my preferred way to mash a banana. Just slice the overripe, peeled bananas in half and place them in a bowl, and use a fork to mash them up.
Potato Masher - pretty much the same method as above except you use a potato masher, which is probably easier to use than a fork because you can actually grip the large handle.
Food Processor - this is the fastest way to mash the bananas! Be sure not to over-process them or you they'll liquify!
What to put on pancakes besides syrup
There are lots of delicious toppings for your cooked pancakes! Here is just a small list of suggested toppings instead of or in addition to syrup. Choose one or mix and match!
- Peanut butter or Nutella
- Any kind of berries such as blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries.
- Jam or jelly
- Fried chicken (yes, I said it!)
- Honey
- Whipped cream
- Powdered sugar
- Chocolate syrup or caramel sauce
