Y'all, Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes with skin on are amazing! These yellow potatoes are already smooth and buttery on their own, but when you add real butter and sour cream, they go to a whole new creamy, fluffy level.
The butter just melts in, making them rich and smooth, while the sour cream gives them this slight tang that’s delish! Toss in garlic powder, salt, and black pepper for the perfect seasoning (and a little sliced green onions on top).

Why You'll Love Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes
Quick and Easy. This easy side dish comes together in about 20 minutes! Boiling the potatoes is the longest step, and if you slice the potatoes into small cubes, they'll be tender in about 10 minutes. Hungry for more? Another quick and easy side dish is my ever so popular simple mac and cheese.
Hearty and Flavorful. I like to leave the skin on the potatoes for more hearty texture and flavor. Plus, no peeling saves you time! Double the recipe for a larger crowd.
Comforting and Satisfying. Adding butter and sour cream makes these mashed potatoes extra creamy and delicious! They're simply the best!
Ingredients You Need
- Potatoes. I'm a fan of all variety of potatoes! But for this recipe, Yukon Golds (or yellow potatoes) are the clear winner because they're extra creamy and buttery all on their own making them great for mashed potatoes.
- Butter. The butter, the real butter, and nothing but the real butter!
- Sour cream. Gives mashed potatoes silky smooth texture and added tangy flavor!
- Milk. I tested this recipe with whole milk but low fat would be OK. Either way, you will need to warm the milk before using to help with absorption and to keep the potatoes from cooling off.
- Seasonings. Simple seasonings used are garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Garnish. I love using sliced green onions on top for extra flavor, and it also looks pretty. Another nice garnish would be paprika or smoked paprika.
Substitutions and Additions
I love these mashed potatoes with the listed ingredients! But in case you need some ingredient swaps or additions, I've listed some that may come in handy.
- Heavy cream or half and half can be used in place of the whole milk.
- Salted butter can be used instead of unsalted butter; just keep that in mind before adding more salt.
- Greek yogurt or cream cheee can replace the sour cream.
- Top with chives, bacon bits, or a little shredded cheddar cheese for added flavor flair!

Recipe Tips
- Take the sour cream, butter, and milk out of the fridge before you start prepping the potatoes so that they won't be ice cold when you add them to the hot cooked potatoes.
- Wash the potatoes and dry them before you begin the recipe.
- Prep the potatoes by slicing them into 1-inch cubes. This will help them cook in a shorter amount of time.
- Always taste test before serving them to make sure the flavorings suit your taste.
- If you prefer a smoother mashed potato consistency, whip them for a few more minutes.

Russet Potatoes vs Yukon Gold
What makes these mashed potatoes so special is the type of potatoes used. We used Yukon Golds because they are naturally creamy and buttery, giving you a smooth, velvety texture; they're simply perfect for this recipe! If you also need a dairy free version, I also use Yukon Golds in these Olive Oil Mashed Potaotes!
Russets are fluffier and lighter, but can be dry and need more butter or cream. However, I absolutely love Russet potatoes in my Parmesan Herb Sliced Potatoes which are baked in the oven in a cast iron skillet, and these Fried Potatoes and Onions!
Holiday Pairings
Here are some of my popular holiday dishes that would pair perfectly with Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes:
- Thanksgiving Chicken – A flavorful and festive chicken dish perfect for holiday gatherings. Its rich, savory seasoning would complement the creamy mashed potatoes wonderfully.
- Southern Pecan Pie – This classic, sweet dessert offers a rich and nutty finish to a holiday meal, balancing out the savory main course.
- Cornbread Dressing – A classic side that pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, adding a slightly sweet and herby touch.
- Skillet Apple Crisp – For a warm and cozy dessert, this baked apple treat adds a sweet finish, especially if served with ice cream or whipped cream.
These options offer a balance of hearty, savory, and sweet elements for any holiday celebration!
Storing Leftovers
Store leftovers tightly covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can also freeze leftovers for up to 2 months making them a fantastic make-ahead friendly side dish!
Recipe FAQs
Yes, they can be made ahead and reheated. Store them tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the microwave or on the stove just until hot. I typically do not have to add any additional butter or milk when reheating them. But if you feel they need a little something, then add a splash of milk or pat of butter.
Not necessarily! Yukon Golds have thin, soft skins, so you can leave them on for a more rustic texture. They also taste great!
For 6 people, you will need 3 pounds of potatoes. For 4 people, you
will need 2 pounds. For 10 people, use 5 pounds of potatoes.

- 3 lbs Yukon Gold (yellow) potatoes, unpeeled, cut into 1" chunks or cubes
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2-3 sliced green onions for garnish tip - use scissors to slice the onions
Instructions

- Add the butter, milk, sour cream, garlic powder, black pepper, and ½ teaspoon of salt.
