Y'all, Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes with skin on are amazing! These yellow potatoes are already smooth and buttery on their own, but when you add real butter and sour cream, they go to a whole new creamy, fluffy level.

The butter just melts in, making them rich and smooth, while the sour cream gives them this slight tang that's delish!

Our favorite way to serve them is with Orange Marmalade Ham and Crispy Broccoli Cauliflower Salad.

Green onions are a great topping but you could also use shredded cheese, cooked bacon pieces or smoked paprika. These creamy mashed potatoes are perfect with just about anything-especially homemade venison meatballs for a cozy, hearty dinner.

Why You'll Love Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes

Quick and Easy. This easy side dish comes together in about 20 minutes! Boiling the potatoes is the longest step, and if you slice the potatoes into small cubes, they'll be tender in about 10 minutes. Hungry for more? Another quick and easy side dish is my ever so popular simple mac and cheese.

Hearty and Flavorful. I like to leave the skin on the potatoes for more hearty texture and flavor. Plus, no peeling saves you time! Double the recipe for a larger crowd.

Comforting and Satisfying. Adding butter and sour cream makes these mashed potatoes extra creamy and delicious! They're simply the best!

    Ingredients You Need

Ingredients measured out in individual containers.
    • Potatoes. I'm a fan of all variety of potatoes! But for this recipe, Yukon Golds (or yellow potatoes) are the clear winner because they're extra creamy and buttery all on their own making them great for mashed potatoes.
    • Butter. The butter, the real butter, and nothing but the real butter!
    • Sour cream. Gives mashed potatoes silky smooth texture and added tangy flavor!
    • Milk. I tested this recipe with whole milk but low fat would be OK. Either way, you will need to warm the milk before using to help with absorption and to keep the potatoes from cooling off.
    • Seasonings. Simple seasonings used are garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
    • Garnish. I love using sliced green onions on top for extra flavor, and it also looks pretty. Another nice garnish would be paprika or smoked paprika.

If you love classic mashed potatoes, my Double Baked Mashed Potatoes take things up a notch with melty cheese and crispy bacon on top.

    Substitutions and Additions

I love these mashed potatoes with the listed ingredients! But in case you need some ingredient swaps or additions, I've listed some that may come in handy.

    • Heavy cream or half and half can be used in place of the whole milk.
    • Salted butter can be used instead of unsalted butter; just keep that in mind before adding more salt.
    • Greek yogurt or cream cheee can replace the sour cream.
    • Top with chives, bacon bits, or a little shredded cheddar cheese for added flavor flair!

Are you making this recipe? If so, please follow the Recipe Card at the bottom of this post to ensure you get the best results!

Boiled sliced potatoes in a pot.
Step 1 - boil the potatoes until fork tender, drain, and return them to the pot.
Cooked potatoes, sour cream, butter, and milk in a pot.
Step 2 - add the sour cream, butter, milk, and seasonings.
Mashed potatoes with all ingredients in the pot.
Step 3 - blend on low speed with your hand mixer until smooth but still a little chunky.

Step 4 - place in your favorite serving dish and top with sliced green onions.

    Recipe Tips

    • Take the sour cream, butter, and milk out of the fridge before you start prepping the potatoes so that they won't be ice cold when you add them to the hot cooked potatoes.
    • Wash the potatoes and dry them before you begin the recipe.
    • Prep the potatoes by slicing them into 1-inch cubes. This will help them cook in a shorter amount of time.
    • Always taste test before serving them to make sure the flavorings suit your taste.
    • If you prefer a smoother mashed potato consistency, whip them for a few more minutes.

What to Serve With Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes

Here are some delicious dishes from My Kitchen Serenity that would pair wonderfully with Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes:

    1. Ground Venison Stroganoff - This hearty and creamy dish, loaded with mushrooms and a rich sauce, complements the buttery texture of Yukon Gold mashed potatoes beautifully. It's a comforting, savory meal perfect for fall evenings.
    2. Cod with Garlic Herb Butter - If you're looking for a lighter option, this flaky, mild cod topped with flavorful garlic herb butter is a great match for mashed potatoes. The richness of the butter sauce complements the smooth, creamy potatoes perfectly.
    3. Ritz Cracker Meatloaf - For a homestyle classic, this meatloaf with buttery Ritz crackers adds a bit of texture and richness to a plate of mashed potatoes. Together, they create a filling and comforting meal.

All of these options bring out the best in Yukon Gold mashed potatoes, offering hearty, flavorful combinations!

    Russet Potatoes vs Yukon Gold

What makes these mashed potatoes so special is the type of potatoes used. We used Yukon Golds because they are naturally creamy and buttery, giving you a smooth, velvety texture; they're simply perfect for this recipe! If you also need a dairy free version, I also use Yukon Golds in these Olive Oil Mashed Potaotes!

Russets are fluffier and lighter, but can be dry and need more butter or cream. However, I absolutely love Russet potatoes in my Parmesan Herb Sliced Potatoes which are baked in the oven in a cast iron skillet, and these Fried Potatoes and Onions!

    Holiday Pairings

Here are some of my popular holiday dishes that would pair perfectly with Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes:

    1. Thanksgiving Chicken - A flavorful and festive chicken dish perfect for holiday gatherings. Its rich, savory seasoning would complement the creamy mashed potatoes wonderfully.
    2. old fashioned southern pecan pie recipe - This classic, sweet dessert offers a rich and nutty finish to a holiday meal, balancing out the savory main course.
    3. Cornbread Dressing - A classic side that pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, adding a slightly sweet and herby touch.
    4. Skillet Apple Crisp - For a warm and cozy dessert, this baked apple treat adds a sweet finish, especially if served with ice cream or whipped cream.

These options offer a balance of hearty, savory, and sweet elements for any holiday celebration!

    Storing Leftovers

Store leftovers tightly covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can also freeze leftovers for up to 2 months making them a fantastic make-ahead friendly side dish!

    Recipe FAQs

Can you make Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes ahead of time?

Yes, they can be made ahead and reheated. Store them tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the microwave or on the stove just until hot. I typically do not have to add any additional butter or milk when reheating them. But if you feel they need a little something, then add a splash of milk or pat of butter.

Should I peel Yukon Gold Potatoes before boiling?

Not necessarily! Yukon Golds have thin, soft skins, so you can leave them on for a more rustic texture. They also taste great!

How many potatoes per person for mashed potatoes?

For 6 people, you will need 3 pounds of potatoes. For 4 people, you
will need 2 pounds. For 10 people, use 5 pounds of potatoes.
